Roundabout art
Sculptures for public spaces – with a wink
Together with my sculptor, I design artworks specifically for public spaces – with an emphasis on roundabouts, squares, and open areas where people pass by, pause, or simply drive past. Not grey abstractions, but colourful sculptures with a humorous and positive message.
🌥️ First collection: Head in the clouds
The first series consists of large cloud objects, each featuring one powerful symbol – clear, funny, and inviting. For example:
– a cheerful cartoon character's head happily peeking above the clouds
– a radiant sun smiling as it breaks through the clouds
– a large, blue thumbs-up as a friendly landmark
These sculptures create a slight confusion: "Hey, what do I see there?" – a moment of wonder. And that is precisely the goal: a wink to the passer-by, a small thought in the mind of those who pass, a laugh or reassurance in passing.
☀️ A positive contribution to the living environment
These sculptures are designed not only to fill the space but to give people something: a feeling of joy, recognition, hope. Art in public spaces can be lighthearted. It can help. It can have a message. And it can – and should – make people happy.

Need roundabout art? Get in touch
Are you a municipality, area developer or real estate party and do you want to give a unique interpretation to a roundabout, square or public space? My roundabout sculptures are:
- low-maintenance
- sustainably produced
- suitable for all ages
- Cheerful and positive
Let's work together on roundabout art that truly makes a difference.
Technical aspects of art in public spaces
Art in public spaces, and especially art on roundabouts, must not only be visually striking – it must also be technically well-conceived. Because these sculptures are exposed 24/7 to weather, wind, and traffic, municipalities and executing parties place high demands on materials, fastening, and safety.
1. Material Selection – Durable and Low-Maintenance
Our roundabout art is manufactured from weather-resistant materials such as:
– strong, rust-resistant, and resistant to vandalism
– lightweight, freeform, UV-resistant, and easy to clean
– ensure color retention and protection against graffiti
The sculptures are made from durable material using 3D printing technology. This innovative production method makes it possible to create lightweight but strong structures that are both detailed and large-scale. The advantages of this approach:
- Lightweight yet sturdy – less strain on the foundation
- Freeform – complex, unique shapes are possible
- Efficient production yet sturdy – less strain on the foundation
- Complex, unique shapes are possible
- Quickly scalable and reproducible. All artworks are suitable for multi-year placement without intensive maintenance.
After printing, the sculptures are carefully finished with a combination of spray paint and a weather-resistant protective layer, ensuring that the colors remain vibrant for a long time and the surface is resistant to UV radiation, rain, dirt, and graffiti.
2. Structural Safety
Roundabout art must be resistant to:
- Strong gusts of wind
- Vehicle accidents
- Vibrations and ground settlement
Therefore, the sculptures can be developed in consultation with a structural engineer or engineering firm. This includes:
- Anchoring in concrete foundations
- Stability under high wind loads (according to NEN standards)
- Use of lightweight materials for elevated placement
Depending on the municipality and location, additional requirements may apply, such as a CE mark or demonstrable structural calculations.
3. Placement and Assembly
Our sculptures are designed with a modular construction, so they can be easily assembled on-site. The placement of roundabout art usually occurs in collaboration with:
- Municipal public works departments
- Civil engineering contractors
- Traffic safety coordinators
For each artwork, we provide technical drawings, foundation advice, and a maintenance plan. Upon request, we can also supervise the entire process from production to placement.
4. Traffic Safety and Sightlines
According to the CROW Road Design Manual, roundabout art must comply with strict guidelines to ensure traffic safety. Therefore, during the design process, we always consider:
– to avoid blocking sightlines
– balance between prominence and serenity
– in accordance with guidelines for obstacle-free zones
We ensure that art functions as a landmark, without affecting traffic flow or safety.Sculpture height and transparency – to avoid blocking sightlines
Distraction effects – balance between prominence and serenity
Distance to the roadway – in accordance with guidelines for obstacle-free zones

Technical requirements for roundabout art
What are the requirements?
Placing art on a roundabout or in public spaces requires more than just a powerful design. Municipalities and road authorities apply clear technical guidelines to ensure the safety of road users and the durability of the artwork. Hans Breuker therefore collaborates with engineers, contractors, and suppliers to realize every sculpture in a technically sound and future-proof manner.
Below you will find the most important technical requirements for roundabout art.
1. Safety and traffic standards.
According to the CROW Road Design Manual and the Guidelines for the design of roundabouts, the following safety conditions apply:
Sufficient distance from the roadway: artworks must be placed outside the so-called obstacle-free zone (usually 3 to 5 meters from the roadway).
Limited height or open structure: the sculpture must not block drivers' sightlines. Therefore, we design with transparent volumes or limit the height to visually safe dimensions.
No distraction or glare: the artwork must appeal to passers-by without excessively distracting road users. For example, we avoid reflective surfaces and bright flashing light sources.
2. Wind load and structural stability
Because the sculptures are located in open spaces, such as roundabouts, wind load is an important consideration. We take into account:
Calculated wind load according to Eurocode (EN 1991-1-4)
Strength calculations for pile and foundation construction
Use of load-bearing materials such as steel, with chemical anchoring in concrete
A static design is possible for each sculpture, including a report from a certified structural engineer – if required by the municipality.
3. Foundation and placement
Our sculptures are typically placed with:
A custom iron support pole (size depends on wind pressure and sculpture weight)
Anchoring in a precast or poured concrete base (approx. 100 × 100 × 80 cm, depending on the terrain)
Optionally, a flange plate with wedge anchors for placement on existing pavement or pedestals
We provide placement advice and drawings in consultation with municipal departments or civil engineering partners.
4. Materials and durability
We use 3D-printed composite material with the following advantages:
Lightweight, yet strong – resistant to mechanical stress and thermal fluctuations
UV-resistant and frost-free – suitable for any climate
Recyclable and environmentally friendly – fits within the sustainable policies of many municipalities
The sculptures are provided with a two to three-layer coating:
Primer for adhesion
Water-based or PU-based color lacquer
Transparent protective layer against graffiti, UV, and pollution
Optionally, sculptures can be finished with an anti-graffiti coating or a sealed epoxy layer.
5. Vandalism resistance
Art in public spaces must be resistant to vandalism. Therefore, we opt for:
Elevated placement on poles
Reinforced connections
Coatings that can be easily cleaned
In addition, technical drawings and maintenance guidelines are available for municipal managers for each work.
Technical documentation and custom solutions
For each project, we can provide the following:
- Technical drawing (2D and 3D)
- Static calculation / structural report (if required)
- On-site foundation advice
- Installation manual
- Maintenance plan
