Mr. CA$H is a vibrant mix of pop culture influences, with Hans Breuker as the creative mind behind it. The artistic character stems from a fascination with the iconic Monopoly figure, as well as the artistic flair of American artist ALEC Monopoly and Dutch artist Herman Brood. I draw my inspiration from my childhood filled with Super Nintendo, SEGA, comic books, and cartoons. I mix it with my fascination with advertising and pop culture imagery. Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Roy Liechtenstein, of course, are my ultimate examples in the art world. But currently, I also draw inspiration from graffiti and Instagram. Mr. CA$H is, of course, slightly ironic because of the mash-up of existing 'art' elements and my view of the art world. The ultimate irony of art is that it is a personal expression, but always has a certain monetary value attached to it. Hence Mr. CA$H ironically addresses the hysterical prices of some works of art and his own price.

Andy the Dandy, a self-proclaimed art phenomenon, is exactly that. His name, tag and of course the cute little blue face are everywhere. Creator Hans Breuker, from Amstelveen, has something thin. The story of Andy the Dandy is so meta that it is brilliantly strange. Created by Dinsey studios to give a raw figure in response to the popularity of Garfield and the Looney Tunes. He is opposite Mickey in the movie: Mickey in the big city. Where he tries to make money from Mickey's fame while being chased by his shy people. Of course it is only fiction… But fiction is never far from 'reality'. Andy would get into all kinds of trouble with tagging and partying. When he was fired, Andy did exactly the same as the character portrayed in MMITC. In the nineties things got out of hand. He was sentenced to prison in 2005 for smuggling weed and growing it by the busload. In his Instagram stories and posts he does a lot of throwbacks. All fictional of course. But very entertaining. The sarcasm, self-mockery and hip-hop references are omnipresent and still play into today's hypes and trends. While I'm doing time. He discovered art as an escape. When he got out. Instagram was there. He had to make ammunition fast. While he's in the middle of this madness, Andy makes art and takes selfies. You never know if the influencer deals are real or not. Hans Breuker plays with reality and fiction. And people and brands love it. Hans Breuker once said. Andy does what I couldn't.

In my latest collection, Gold Pink Pleasure, I invite you to explore the world of gold and symbols. What happens when we immerse a normal, everyday product—like a teddy bear—in a layer of gold and present it against a vibrant pink background? How does perception change when we transform iconic pop art symbols, like the Campbell's soup can, into "Gold Soup" and let it float in a golden space? In this collection, I've assembled more than 50 objects, ranging from a cube to a Porsche, from a banana to a mask. Together, they form a visual exploration of simplicity, class, and style. With a golden glow against a bright pink background, they create not only an intense sensory stimulation but also an image of luxury and playful pleasure that invites you to look at these icons anew.

The Philosophy of Gold and Value

Gold has had an almost mythical meaning since the beginning of time. It symbolizes wealth, power, and immortality. Gold Pink Pleasure I use gold as a way to elevate everyday objects, to detach them from their functional value and see them as something more. A teddy bear, for example, is a symbol of youth and innocence, but by transforming it into gold, it becomes something striking and elusive. It makes us wonder: when we see gold, what do we really see? What does it mean to assign value to a material, and how does that change the way we look at objects?

With gold, I play with the perception of value and the illusion attached to it. The idea that a golden teddy bear might be more valuable than a regular one is intriguing and makes us wonder: Is value simply what we want to see, or is there something deeper behind this transformation?

In this collection the objects are not chosen at random; they are iconic images that all have a place in our cultural memory. Campbell's soup can For example, something that was elevated by pop art to a symbol of mass consumption is transformed by my treatment in gold into a “Gold Soup.” This places the everyday in a new context and shows how luxury and mass production intersect. What happens when we see these icons through the lens of gold? They are recognized not just as symbols, but as objects that push the boundaries of status and meaning.

By changing the context, a tension arises between what the objects once meant and what they now symbolize. These images, which we usually recognize, become something more demanding of us—they invite us to reflect on the value and status we assign to objects every day.

Meet my new Dollar Collection: The Essence of Art and Life

I am always attracted to art that looks simple, that you don’t stumble over but that touches you directly. Few colors, loose lines or just tight contours – that is what makes my heart beat faster. Old black and white comics like Garfield and Peanuts (Snoopy) have a nostalgic appeal to me, just like the elegant complexity of calligraphy. Simple, but never superficial. It is precisely those elements that reveal a deeper layer: the essence.

In my daily activities I often follow my feelings and inspiration. Recently I watched an art documentary in which an artist spoke about that essence. How Picasso captured the essence of a person, how Morandi brought a still life to life with simplicity, how Andy Warhol embodied the essence of pop culture with Marilyn Monroe. Keith Haring did it with straight lines that combined playfulness and depth.

My dream has always been to create an icon that will serve eternity. Think of the Gubbels teapot, the smiley, or the HOPE poster by Shepard Fairey. These kinds of icons don't just happen; they are the result of a lot of making, a lot of trying, and always staying in motion. With Grrrouch the Cat, my Bored Bears, Andy the Dandy and the Robonoid I have made quite a few attempts. But does it capture the essence? No, not quite yet. Until last night.

What is the essence?

What is the essence in the world? In the art world? In my world? The answer came like a flash of lightning: money. Money. Cash. And what symbol represents money more strongly than the dollar sign? The $ sign is universally recognizable and evokes a different feeling in everyone: envy, hate, apathy, status, power, love, fear, tension, eroticism.

There is no other symbol that evokes so many emotions. Especially for a commercial artist like me. For me, money means freedom. The more money, the more freedom. But money also stands for fear – the fear of being left empty-handed, dependent on the whims of AOW, the government, or insurers.

My new Dollar Collection is all about this powerful symbol. The dollar sign is the common thread, but the collection goes beyond superficial interpretations. I use the sign to play with contrasts and emotions. Think of raw lines versus straight surfaces, minimalist compositions with an explosion of color, or monochrome designs that find their strength in simplicity.

The dollar sign is great for me to make. Every shape gives a different feeling, every color, repetition or austerity a different work. Big or small. Light abstract, calligraffiti style or just tight pop art. The collection makes the dollar sign even more interesting for me. The symbol offers endless possibilities to experiment and discover new meanings.

The collection explores what money means to all of us – whether it evokes freedom, power, excitement or fear. Each artwork in the collection invites you to consider your own relationship with the $ sign. It is a celebration of the essence of our modern existence.

Comic art

I have been fond of comics since I was young. Drawings and the adventures. Of Suske and Wiske, Asterix, Robbedoes, Garfield and later Xmen, Batman and Superman. Absolutely wonderful. I practiced copying for hours and I dreamed of a life as a pencil artist. Now I don't really draw comics (too little patience) but I still come pretty close!
