That question is absolutely crazy. Because how much does it cost?
The honest answer is, as much as one person is ultimately willing to pay for it.
But how much does a Hans Breuker artwork cost?
That is made up of a number of facets:
- the size of the artwork
- the material of the artwork
- the paint, etc.
- how complex it is
- how long it takes me to make it
- how much time it takes to photograph it and upload it neatly to the websites (at least an hour)
- is it a commissioned work or a free work
This is the basis.
How long it takes is sometimes a very strange approach to costing. Because as humans we are so used to "time is money", the time factor is important for the consumer.
How much time do you spend on a work of art?
I'm a freak, I love the process of being busy and it gives me a kick to finish something. Dopamine shot! That's why I create a lot and work fast.
But. Consider that I have been practicing and working my whole life to get better; what sometimes takes me one line to sketch, takes someone else two hours. So time is then a false factor.
But there is a basis on which you can estimate the works of 50 x 70 cm or 60 x 80 cm.
Undercoat, 15-20 minutes
sketching subject 15-60 minutes
sketch on canvas 10-20 minutes
coloring first layer 30-45 minutes
wait
coloring second layer 30-45 minutes
wait
outline 1, 10-15 minutes
wait
outline 2, 5 minutes
Is a work of art expensive or cheap?
A large part of a work of art, just like a pair of jeans, is the brand. Is Hans Breuker already a big brand? The answer is "meh". It's upcoming ;-)
The fact that I spend a few hours on a pop art work and then ask, for example, 500, is cheap. The sketching, the undercoat, the painting, the waiting and painting again, the marketing, the uploading, the packing and taking it to the post office. It's crazy, of course. You earn more per hour as an Uber driver.
But I'm addicted. And I love it. So this is my path. The consumer, of course, only sees the final price. I understand that too.
Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of the costs and the work behind creating a work of art.
