A Golden Homage to Aalsmeer
In a magnificent tribute to Aalsmeer's rich history and beautiful surroundings, talented artist Hans Breuker has created a masterpiece that brings the updated coat of arms of this Dutch town to life. With flowing brushstrokes and stunning use of gold and symbolic elements, Breuker has transformed the municipal coat of arms into a work of art that represents the heart of Aalsmeer.

Additions to the coat of arms
“I wanted to give the coat of arms something extra, without detracting from the existing one, but rather to add power and meaning to it. I know Aalsmeer well; my wife is from there, and my father-in-law was mayor there for twenty-five years. I think the motto on the municipal coat of arms suits the people of Aalsmeer very well, so I wanted to add that.
The pen strokes around the shield are my trademark when illustrating coats of arms; it's my way of bringing a shield to life and giving it something extra.”
A royal touch to the Aalsmeer shield
The most striking feature of Breuker's interpretation of the city's coat of arms is undoubtedly his use of gold. The gold shines like a precious treasure, giving the coat of arms a majestic appearance. The shimmer of the gold reflects Aalsmeer's historical importance as a center for trade and wealth, especially in the flower industry. The gold is reminiscent of the lush flowers so characteristic of Aalsmeer.
Something extra
Another striking element in Hans Breuker's artwork is the depictions of eels and water waves. These elements are inspired by the Aalsmeerse Poel, a beautiful nature reserve central to the town's identity. The eels reflect the unique flora and fauna of the region and symbolize the community's connection to nature. The water waves remind us of the beauty of the many lakes and canals that surround Aalsmeer and have traditionally been a source of pride for the local population.

Retain what you have
Furthermore, Hans Breuker has made a meaningful addition to the town's coat of arms in the form of a banner with Aalsmeer's motto: "Retine, Quod Habes," which can be translated as "Retain what you have." This motto emphasizes the importance of cherishing and preserving the valuable aspects of the community and Aalsmeer's heritage. It is a reminder of the pride and care that the residents of Aalsmeer have for their town and its history.
The updated Aalsmeer coat of arms by artist Hans Breuker is a masterpiece that celebrates the beauty and rich history of Aalsmeer in a unique and enchanting way.
