Art in public spaces, and especially art on roundabouts, must not only be visually striking – it must also be technically well-conceived. Because these sculptures are exposed 24/7 to weather, wind, and traffic, municipalities and executing parties place high demands on materials, fastening, and safety.

1. Material Selection – Durable and Low-Maintenance

Our roundabout art is manufactured from weather-resistant materials such as:
– strong, rust-resistant, and resistant to vandalism

2. Structural Safety

What are the requirements?

Placing art on a roundabout or in public spaces requires more than just a powerful design. Municipalities and road authorities apply clear technical guidelines to ensure the safety of road users and the durability of the artwork. Hans Breuker therefore collaborates with engineers, contractors, and suppliers to realize every sculpture in a technically sound and future-proof manner.

Below you will find the most important technical requirements for roundabout art.

1. Safety and traffic standards.

According to the CROW Road Design Manual and the Guidelines for the design of roundabouts, the following safety conditions apply:

Sufficient distance from the roadway: artworks must be placed outside the so-called obstacle-free zone (usually 3 to 5 meters from the roadway).

Limited height or open structure: the sculpture must not block drivers' sightlines. Therefore, we design with transparent volumes or limit the height to visually safe dimensions.

No distraction or glare: the artwork must appeal to passers-by without excessively distracting road users. For example, we avoid reflective surfaces and bright flashing light sources.

2. Wind load and structural stability

Because the sculptures are located in open spaces, such as roundabouts, wind load is an important consideration. We take into account:

Calculated wind load according to Eurocode (EN 1991-1-4)

Strength calculations for pile and foundation construction

Use of load-bearing materials such as steel, with chemical anchoring in concrete

A static design is possible for each sculpture, including a report from a certified structural engineer – if required by the municipality.

3. Foundation and placement

Our sculptures are typically placed with:

A custom iron support pole (size depends on wind pressure and sculpture weight)

Anchoring in a precast or poured concrete base (approx. 100 × 100 × 80 cm, depending on the terrain)

Optionally, a flange plate with wedge anchors for placement on existing pavement or pedestals

We provide placement advice and drawings in consultation with municipal departments or civil engineering partners.

4. Materials and durability

We use 3D-printed composite material with the following advantages:

Lightweight, yet strong – resistant to mechanical stress and thermal fluctuations

UV-resistant and frost-free – suitable for any climate

Recyclable and environmentally friendly – fits within the sustainable policies of many municipalities

The sculptures are provided with a two to three-layer coating:
