“Getting Over the Wine Hangover Through Karel Appel Inspiration” is een groot en persoonlijk zelfportret van Hans Breuker in zijn nieuwe neo-brut stijl.
Het werk verbeeldt de ochtend na Koningsnacht. De fles hangt nog boven zijn hoofd, de kater is voelbaar, maar toch pakt Hans alweer de kwast op. Niet uit discipline alleen, maar uit pure creatieve noodzaak. De inspiratie van Karel Appel is op dat moment overal aanwezig: in de felle kleuren, de grove vormen, de directe lijnvoering en de bijna kinderlijke vrijheid waarmee het beeld is opgebouwd.
In het schilderij zien we geen traditioneel zelfportret, maar een innerlijke toestand. Het gebroken vlak dat wordt beschilderd, staat symbool voor een gebroken rand in het hoofd: de mentale rafel na een nacht te veel wijn, lawaai en feest. Juist daar ontstaat de kunst. Niet wanneer alles netjes en gecontroleerd is, maar wanneer het hoofd rommelig is en de hand toch begint te schilderen.
